"In the second half of 2014 DC will play host to two high-profile events, the Microsoft Worldwide Partner Conference in July and Jehovah's Witness International Convention in August. Microsoft expects to welcome 15,000 attendees and utilize over 68,000 hotel room nights while the Jehovah's Witness convention expects over 60,000 attendees, made up of families from around the globe and expects to bring some $41 million in impact to the local economy."

Writing campaign to Washington DC papers in view of International Convention
by Londo111 inive heard from a credible source that the landover (dc) international convention is important to the society in view of the 100 year anniversary of "kingdom rule" and the location being near the capital of the "seventh world power".
perhaps they hope this particular international sends a message.
we know that come convention time usually there is some feel good fluff piece in the newspapers about the watchtower religion.

"The leadership have been telling their followers to warn people that they need to either join the Witnesses or face destruction for more than a century now, which is all part of the excitement building up towards this convention, as it makes the average Witness think that the much longed-for end of the world 'must be close now'.
They eagerly look forward to the time when any who disagree with their teachings, or do not listen to them, are destroyed as part of an earthwide cleansing of 'wickedness'. This is despite the fact that many Witnesses have family members that refuse to join them."
From part of my letter. It would be great to have other people post a template letter, as I'm no Shakespeare..
IMHO, I can't see an editor being interested that Jw's used to say the end was coming in 1914, then changed it. Although it would be less controversial.. Hasn't every doomsday religion in history done something similar, though?
Anyway, I'm backing off now, I hope someone finds an idea worth using. -

Yeah, I know that the grammar stinks and the punctuation is all wrong, but I'm not exactly a Grade A student.
If someone could tidy it up/add to it, that would be brilliant. -

(Only a rough guide, I don't know how to introduce this. Feel free to use any or all of this template, or suggest alterations and post how you think it could look better. Cheers!)
At the upcoming convention, the Witnesses will not be merely reading from the Bible and encouraging people to live a moral life and show Christian qualities such as love, kindness and mercy.
The Witnesses, in reality, study and learn from their publications, that tell them what the Bible really teaches (they have even produced a book called What Does The Bible Really Teach?).
These books and study magazines cause fear and guilt for anyone not doing enough preaching work, or not doing whatever the leadership says that the Bible commands, and speak of how their survival is dependent on doing the maximum possible amount of this work, which is always to take priority over any family ties and relationships.
They use controlling, fear-inducing statements, and tell people what they need to do in every aspect of life, in order not to be destroyed by God.
Further, they teach that anyone who refuses to change all of their beliefs to match up entirely with current Witness doctrine and join their group, will be killed at Armageddon (although they will avoid this if directly questioned on the matter), the end of the world which is due to happen 'any day now'.
The leadership have been telling their followers to warn people that they need to join the Witnesses , or face destruction, for more than a century now, which is all part of the excitement building up towards this convention, as it makes the average Witness think that the much longed-for end of the world 'must be close now'.
They eagerly look forward to the time when any who disagree with their teachings, or do not listen to them, are destroyed as part of an earthwide cleansing of 'wickedness'. This is despite the fact that many Witnesses have family members that refuse to join them.
This kind of destructive and unmerciful view of the world instills fear in people who may want to leave, and motivates them further to obey the leaders (who tell them what doctrines to believe and how to act in daily life in order to ensure unity of thought), or else they and their children will be killed by God for being disobedient to His 'earthly channel of communication'.
These leaders who claim, not to speak to God but to speak FOR Him, are called the Governing Body of Jehovahs Witnesses (they decide on all kinds of organisation procedures and doctrinal changes, making them in effect the Leaders), and they instruct even close family members to have nothing to do with each if other once anyone is expelled from the Jehovah's Witness group, even if their childs only 'sin' was disagreeing with a teaching. This would be, of course, after they had been warned to just believe what they are told in the publications. Expulsion, or disfellowshipping, requires members , including friends and family, not to speak to the former member of the organisation, unless it is regarding absolutely necessary business. Anyone who dares to speak to one who is disfellowshipped faces being expelled and shunned themselves.
Also, denying even life-saving blood transfusions is taught to be compulsory to be a part of the group, and therefore necessary to avoid destruction by God, even in the case of children too young to decide for themselves.
The Witnesses' goal is not to talk about the Bible and to improve family life - which is how they like to portray themselves to the general public - their aim is to draw potential converts in with promises of a paradise earth for those who vow obedience to their God and organisation, and who may be privileged to survive the end of the world with them, just as long as they don't disagree with any of the ever changing doctrines, and fully obey the organisation, no matter how unusual the instructions may seem at the time.
Witnesses are warned that, if they fail to obey the instructions from the organisation, it will one day cost them their lives. Survival through the 'end of this world' is constantly drummed into Witness minds as being dependent on obedience to the Governing Body's directions.
This theme is repeated often, though subtly and in a way that is difficult to see at first, throughout their publications.

Well don't worry, I won't be polluting the site with my racist propaganda any longer. (!)
...
Back to the topic, all the youth in my hall are getting baptised in their teens, but there are a lot of young'uns, so they form a clique, whereas some congs may have very few socialising opportunities for the youth. In my very limited experience, only the type of rebels that listen to heavy rap music and play Grand Theft Auto have stopped attending. Or maybe it was just the ones that did these things and were smart aswell.. -

The Bible Teach book illustration about the child having to be put through a painful operation
by defender of truth inhad you going there for a minute ;).
now you're here... there are several problems with that illustration, as i see it.. ..... 1) god is the one who inflicted the life threatening ailment that requires an operation.
(he supposedly decided what sin would be defined as, then once adam 'sinned', he cursed all of adams descendants to sin, grow old and die.).

Woohoo! Ahem. Thanks guys..
Good point here:"Funny now how we used to think it made perfect sense."
..It isn't even that long ago, when I believed that God was a loving parent, and that temporary suffering was necessary. The question of animal suffering is what really forced me to think about the God I worshipped (off topic I know)..

Had you going there for a minute ;)
Now you're here..
There are several problems with that illustration, as I see it.
....
1) God is the one who inflicted the life threatening ailment that requires an operation.
(He supposedly decided what sin would be defined as, then once Adam 'sinned', He cursed all of Adams descendants to sin, grow old and die.)
....
2) He is not a helpless parent with a dying child who has no choice but to go through with the operation..
He is more like an egocentric specialist doctor overseeing the work and watching his own child suffer.. And He could cure the infant at any time, WITHOUT the need for a long and painful operation, and yet CHOOSES NOT TO, in order to show that people cannot live happily and eternally in an ailment free world where nobody can be harmed- (which is meant to be the successful outcome of the operation in this illustration) - without completely submitting to Him and obeying His every word..
Which has ALREADY been proven, seeing as He is the only person that has the skill to bring about the successful outcome of this cruel 'operation', anyway. All the patients and their parents KNOW that THEY can't achieve this, as it is physically impossible, and beg that He would just cure them, without all of the suffering and dying.
But He just decides to keep putting a countless number of infants through the painful operation anyway, in an endless stream of crying, pain and finally death..
Apparently because He is patient, and waiting for the miniscule percentage that might live through this agonising operation and come out successfully. (an operation, remember, that He invented after first inventing and inflicting the ailment).
In summary, He could cure His child and skip the operation, but He chooses not to.. to prove that nobody else can.
....
3) There are countless infants who will go through the terrible and painful operation, only to be actually murdered by God, at a completely unknown time (Armageddon), just because their parents happen to be alive at the time, and disagree with His neglectful parentage, or are speaking out against the cruel 'operations' on infants that He decided were necessary, or they simply had the private opinion that He was not actually a loving person, or even someone they could have empathy for, but rather an egocentric murderer.
Ironically, after He kills the children, and their parents who thought of Him in this way (at Armageddon), they would have been proven to be correct. Not much comfort, though.
....
4) If there was an issue with a fellow doctor (Satan); who challenged that no parent or their child would go through a horrific and painful operation, that was unnecessary except for the purposes of the challenge, whilst doing whatever He (God) said.. along with holding Him in high regard, thinking of Him as fair and just, and even loving Him, whilst experiencing pain and suffering caused by the ailment He gave them and the operation He put them through..
Why did He not simply kill, render speechless or even just ignore the other doctor (Satan) who challenged Him?
Let me guess, because it wouldn't prove the other doctor wrong?
If some sadistic man said to you, 'Hey, I bet that.. if you were to give me your children, each one for an undefined time, maybe just for a day or maybe for over a hundred years..
I want to emotionally and physically torture them, cause them to suffer infinite types of agony whilst they call to you for help, and you would have to ignore their tears and pleas for rescue.. whilst you stand there and watch it all happen.. I bet they wouldn't still love you, think you are the best and most loving parent possible, and do anything you say throughout that time. Don't worry though, you can have them back and bring them to life, even give them eternal life when I'm through with them.. just as long as they are one of the few that will pass the test, or you'll have to leave them dead for giving up on you and being disloyal'.
..What would you do? Especially bearing in mind that this guy (Satan) had already tried to get your kids to do something that would get them killed, right in front of you (think 'story of the forbidden fruit', they were told they would die and Satan knew that, so he effectively tried to get them killed, bear with me here).
Even if he wouldn't shut up, would you feel that you HAD TO prove the guy wrong? Or would you: restrain him in some way/ignore him/render him unconscious/kill him? Surely you'd do anything but accept the challenge..
Would your sense of 'fairness' and 'justice' cause you to feel that you had NO CHOICE except to settle the issue with that sadistic man once and for all?
